Mold Flow Analysis Example

These images were created as part of a group design project at university. They were created along side those of the Duct Pistol and Machining Path Example as part of the same design brief. These plots are created after the plastic torches geometry has been programmed. They all help decide the molding processes parameters such as mold temperature, meld temperature, injection time and compression time. This is done in a piece of software called Mold Flow. Both 2d and 3d analysis’s of the problem must be completed to decide all of the parameters. Only the 3d plots are shown here, as the 2d plots are not too interesting to look at but are very useful to the engineer.

You will probably have noticed that the geometry used in these plots is obviously not the pistol torch. This is due to a problem at the university. Our pistol model contained very complex 3d NURB surfaces and a number of Trimmed surfaces that made it impossible to convert the geometry accurately into the format required by the Mold Flow software to analyse. As a result, we had to analyse another groups Mold Flow results. Supposedly, this problem has since been solved at the university.
